After a brief decline in his health, Gary Lou Kohl, age 81, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, passed away during surgery on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He was born on September 11, 1944, in Mount Vernon, Ohio, to the late Blaine and Ruth (Spray) Kohl.

Gary graduated from Utica High School in 1962, and joined the United States Army in 1965. He was very proud to serve his country in France and Germany, returning to the United States in 1968. He married Bonnie Shindle on June 10, 1972 and they settled down near the family farm in Mount Vernon. He was an electrician for a number of years before joining his dad on the farm. He was mostly known as a farmer, but he also enjoyed fishing and collecting coins and beer steins. Gary was a longtime member of the Owl Creek Baptist Church, and a member of the Morgan Grange 829. He also enjoyed watching Ohio State Football games from the comfort of his recliner

Gary is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie Kohl, who especially devoted the past several months to his care; sons, David (Amber) Kohl of Delaware, Brad (Kim) Kohl of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Morgan, Alexis, Hannah and Ryan Kohl; a sister, Marlisa (Jim) Bannister of Kiawah Island; niece, Erin Lantz of Kiawah Island; nephew, Trevor (Holli) Lantz of Fort Wayne; and several great nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Sunday, April 12, 2026, from 3:00 pm till 5:00 pm and on Monday, April 13, 2026, from 11:00 am until the time of funeral service, which will start at 12:00 pm. Calling hours and service will be held at Owl Creek Baptist Church; 4044 Owl Creek Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio, 43050. The service will be officiated by Pastor Ben McKinstry. Burial will follow at Owl Creek Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Owl Creek Baptist Church or Owl Creek Cemetery Association at the church address.
