Susan Baldeschwiler, 77, died April 4, 2026, in Maplewood, Minnesota, a few months after suffering a stroke. Susan had only recently relocated to Minnesota from Mount Vernon, Ohio.
Susan was born August 29, 1948, in Yonkers, NY, to the late George and Cecelia (Kennedy) Wenz, the eldest of three children. She loved her parents and especially her siblings. Susan had fond memories of summer vacations and holidays shared with cousins, aunts and uncles.
After graduating from Sacred Heart High School in Yonkers, Susan completed a technical program at The Mandl School in New York City, then began working at Yonkers Professional Hospital. A colleague introduced Susan to her son, a young Navy veteran named Fred Baldeschwiler. They married in 1969; three years later, they moved to Fred’s hometown of Mount Vernon, Ohio.
They worked, had two kids, and got involved in the community. They formed lasting friendships, especially with the “Roosters”, with whom they volunteered, caroused, and travelled for decades.
In 1980, Susan became a charter member of the Dogwood Blossoms Chapter of Sweet Adelines. It’s unlikely that Susan imagined how important this decision would be. For the next 40 years, she held many leadership roles with the chorus and sang with several quartets. Singing barbershop music, and creating fellowship with the other women, was the great hobby and enjoyment of her life.
In 1986, Susan began working at Kenyon College. She served a number of administrative roles, primarily supporting Academic Deans and Provosts, before retiring from Kenyon in 2012.
In retirement, Susan did jigsaw puzzles, played with her cats, and visited several national parks and historical sites. She covered a good number of miles for someone who hated flying.
Susan was supportive and encouraging. She was patient and forgiving. She loved her family and her friends.
In addition to her parents, Susan was preceded in death by her parents-in-law, Leo and Phyllis Baldeschwiler, and her husband of 51 years, Fred, whom cancer claimed five years ago.
She is survived by her children, Kristin Baldeschwiler (Adam Weston) and Andy Baldeschwiler (Caley Vickerman); a grandson, Leo; her siblings, Michael (Lisa) Wenz and Mary Ann Wenz; siblings-in-law, Jim and Betsy (Baldeschwiler) Zeyen; as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. on Monday, April 20, 2026 at the Snyder Funeral Homes, Flowers Chapel, 619 East High St., Mount Vernon. A Prayer service will follow the evening visitation.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 21, 2026 at Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
Susan will be laid to rest beside her husband, Fred, at Quarry Chapel Cemetery in Gambier at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21, 2026
