MOUNT VERNON — When the Winter Sanctuary completed the purchase of a building at 106 W. Ohio Ave. on March 3, it marked a milestone for the homeless shelter.
The non-profit organization paid $800,000 for the two-story structure, but it did not have to raise the funds.
The Knox County Board of Commissioners contributed $500,000 from its American Rescue Plan Act allocation, and the Knox County Foundation funded the remaining $300,000.
However, the organization will have to raise funds for remodeling the building.
“We are still in a silent campaign mode. We’re hoping to kick off a capital campaign this summer,” Executive Director Joe Springer said. “We need more accurate numbers as far as what the full project is going to cost.”
Springer said the organization will keep the remodel as simple as possible.
“It’s more about separating out the space to make it work as a shelter, separating men from the women,” he said. “We’re going to have families in this building, which is a new thing for us and really exciting, so we’ll need to separate those out.”
Remodeling needs include additional bathrooms, showers, a laundry facility, and a sprinkler system.
Springer anticipates opening the new shelter in November 2027, given the remodeling required.
“We will need to raise more funds to finish this. We’re in the home stretch, but we still have a lot of unknowns. We need more accurate pricing and design plans for the remodel,” he said.
Until then, the men’s shelter will remain at 120 S. Norton St.
The Winter Sanctuary houses the women in the parish house of St. Paul Episcopal Church. However, women’s advocacy is conducted from the Norton Street location.
The current facilities house 14 men and eight women.
“We get funds from Job & Family Services to help families with hotels, but of course, that’s a very limited time we’re able to help,” Springer said. “So we’re very, very excited about the family shelter.”
Springer said the goal is to open the family shelter year-round.
