Carol Sue Owens. 84, passed away peacefully at home on March 19, 2026. She was born on March 1, 1942, to Elsworth and Thelma Baker in Springfield, Ohio. She married her high school sweetheart, John G Owen in 1963 and they were married for 61 years.

She graduated from Springfield High School in 1960, and then went to Wittenburg University graduating in 1963 in elementary education. Later she attended The Ohio State University and received her Master’s degree in administration. She worked 37 years in education with 34 of those years in the Mount Vernon City Schools. She taught reading and then was the director of reading programs for 12 years before becoming the principal at Wiggin Street Elementary in Gambier for 22 years. She retired in 2001.

After retiring, Carol Sue was very active in many civic projects and committees in Knox
County She was a member of the Knox County Board of Elections for several years, an active member or the Knox County Republican Party, a member of the Knox County Retired Teachers Assoc, Delta Kappy Gamma, worked on fundraisers for the local dog and cat shelters, and was a co-founder and chairman for the Susan G Komen Rally for the Cure for 20 years and then on the committee for the current Go Pink for a Cure.

In her spare time, Carol Sue was a huge Ohio State Buckeye fan. She loved to play tennis, go to lunch with friends, loved all animals, especially the several dogs and cats she had as pets and she so loved the children and families whose lives she touched over the years.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John in 2004.

Carol Sue is survived by her many friends, her beloved cat, K.C., and her caregivers.

Heartfelt gratitude is given to her faithful and compassionate home health aide, Catrina Knight., who gave exceptional care to John and Carol Sue for 8 years. For the past 6 months, Catrina and 3 others, Becky Knight, Donivon Desich, and Skylar Graham, provided 24 hour care so she could remain at home.

Carol Sue requested no calling hours or memorial service. In her memory, contributions may be made to Wiggin Street School c/o Mount Vernon Board of Education at 300 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio or a charity of one’s choice.
