MOUNT VERNON — The Knox County Sheriff’s Office reported Friday on its Facebook page that officials discovered a deposit of old military explosives on North Sandusky Street.
With the assistance of the Columbus Bomb Squad and the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team, the ordnance was safely removed from the area.
All items were transported to the gravel pit on Millersburg Road near Brinkhaven, Ohio, where they were successfully detonated in a controlled explosion.
Residents in the surrounding areas may have heard a loud explosion as part of the disposal process.
Please be assured that these detonations are planned and controlled, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
If you observe any suspicious objects or possible unexploded ordnance in the future, do not touch or move the item. Contact local authorities immediately.
We appreciate the cooperation and understanding of the community as we work to ensure the safety of all residents.
Knox Pages plans to follow-up with KCSO for a full story soon.
