ASHLAND — An 18-year-old Dayton man is in custody Wednesday night following a high-speed chase that began in Richland County and ended in Ashland.
Jeremiah Mallory, 18, of Dayton, was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon after leading numerous law enforcement agencies on a multi-county chase that originated in Mansfield near the intersection of North Stewart Road and Grace Street.
According to Sgt. Michael Smith of the Ohio State Highway Patrol Richland County – Mansfield Post, the pursuit began around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday when a trooper witnessed a vehicle fail to complete a stop at the intersection of North Stewart Road and Grace Street.
The trooper began to move and activated their overhead lights, Smith said Wednesday evening. Mallory did not stop his vehicle and instead began to flee after turning northbound onto U.S. 42.
Mallory continued traveling northbound on U.S. 42 toward Ashland County at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour, according to Smith. While fleeing, the sergeant said Mallory also passed other northbound vehicles by driving left of center and drove through a red light at the intersection of U.S. 42 and North McElroy Road.
As the pursuit crossed county lines into Ashland County, troopers from the OSHP Ashland County Patrol Post joined the effort to stop Mallory, along with deputies from the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office. Ashland Police Division officers also assisted.
The high-speed pursuit ultimately ended when Mallory swerved in an attempt to avoid law enforcement, which sent the vehicle he was operating off the road and into a snow embankment near the intersection of U.S. 42 and U.S. 250, according to Smith.
After attempting to flee on foot from the vehicle, Mallory was apprehended and taken into custody at the scene. Smith said the 18-year-old was without a driver’s license and also had an active warrant at the time of the incident.
The sergeant said there was one passenger in the vehicle with Mallory who was briefly brought in to the Ashland Patrol Post to arrange plans to be picked up. The passenger was released Wednesday afternoon, he said.
No injuries were reported to Mallory, the passenger or law enforcement after the incident, Smith confirmed. No property damage occurred during the pursuit or crash, he said.
The vehicle involved in the incident was not registered to Mallory nor his passenger, Smith said. This incident remains under investigation by the OSHP Richland County – Mansfield Post.
