ASHLAND — A Tuesday crash involving a car and an Amish buggy resulted in the buggy’s three occupants being ejected.

According to Ashland County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Matt Neff, a Volkswagen Passat and an Amish buggy were both traveling southbound on U.S. 42 on Tuesday morning, just north of Township Road 133.

The Volkswagen, operated by Dennis Smith, 62, of Ashland, collided with the rear of the buggy around 9:30 a.m., Neff said.

Neff described the specific area of U.S. 42 where the incident occurred as “very straight,” with no obstructions or hills.

The collision caused injuries to the horse pulling the buggy and minor injuries to the buggy’s three occupants, John Stutzman, 22, Cevilla Stutzman, 26, and their 4-month-old child, Neff said.

Smith was uninjured. The 62-year-old was cited for assured clear distance ahead.

The Polk-Jackson-Perry Fire District provided EMS services Tuesday, transporting John Stutzman, Cevilla Stutzman and their 4-month-old child to the UH Samaritan Medical Center in Ashland.

Neff said more Amish came to the scene to tend to the horse, which he said sustained a leg injury.
