Orthopedic Answers to Common Joint Questions

Joint stiffness is a common occurrence due to the natural deterioration of tissue in the normal aging process.  This can affect not only the upper extremity and lower extremity but also the neck and lower back.

Developing a lifelong program of low impact exercises emphasizing flexibility and joint range of motion can help prevent arthritis and joint stiffness.  Promoting flexibility of the muscles and tendons that across the joints is an important component of joint stiffness prevention.

Joining a formal program such as tai chi, yoga, or Pilates can help promote flexibility.  One must always remember to exercise common sense and be careful not to overdo it.
