MOUNT VERNON — Knox County experienced severe winter weather conditions during the snow emergency Dec. 13 and 14, prompting an escalation from Level 1 to Level 2.

Throughout this period, Knox County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) deputies worked tirelessly to ensure public safety while navigating extremely hazardous roadways.

Knox County Sheriff Daniel Weckesser issued a Level 1 alert mid-afternoon on Saturday. It escalated to a Level 2 at 6:15 p.m. and was downgraded back to Level 1 around 8:30 Sunday morning.

Weckesser canceled the alert at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

During the roughly 24-hour snow emergency, deputies responded to 63 calls for service as part of routine operations, along with numerous traffic incidents, including:

–17 non-injury crashes

–15 injury-related crashes

Road conditions were treacherous, and travel was strongly discouraged during the Level 2 snow emergency. Residents are urged to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel during winter weather events.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office extends its gratitude to the community for its cooperation and to the township, county, and highway crews for their dedicated efforts. Monitor official alerts for updates on road conditions and emergency levels.
