History Knox
Mark Sebastian Jordan authors a column each Saturday reflecting on the history of Knox County.
BLADENSBURG — One of the things I have to do in writing this column is to be ready for a sudden shift.
This week, I was working on a creepy story that I found from Knox County history, something involving the posthumous adventures of a corpse, which was suitably dark for the Halloween season.
But, as sometimes happens, the story got more complicated and needs more research. So, I’ve pushed that back to next week and substituted a quick and easy one for this weekend.
Thus we have the image here of what is now known as the Bladensburg Church of Christ.
When this real photo postcard image was made over a century ago, it was called Disciples Church, the spelling of which completely bamboozled our poor photographer. Somewhat altered, this beautiful old church is still in use today.
The building stands on Henpeck Road, which heads south out of Bladensburg. The name of the road is intriguing.
Has anyone ever heard why it is called Henpeck Road? That’s the kind of name that must have some story behind it, if anyone remembers it.
That’s the kind of thing we collect here at History Knox, so let us know if it rings a bell (or lays an egg).
Meanwhile, I’ll go back to research on “The Battle of the Body” to come next week, provided that it doesn’t explode into another forgotten epic.
