FREDERICKTOWN — Fredericktown Local School District knows where it stands in the eyes of the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (DEW). On Monday, the school system received its annual School Report Cards based on data from last school year.
Based on a one-to-five-star scale, three Knox County schools received an overall four-star rating, and two schools received a 3.5-star rating.
The Knox County Career Center (KCCC) also received a five-star rating. However, the state calculates KCCC’s rating using a different, unique system.
These report cards score districts and individual K-12 schools using standardized test scores, attendance rates and other categories.
“This year, more than 90% of districts earned overall ratings of three stars or higher, meaning they met or exceeded state expectations for performance,” a DEW press release states.
The DEW also evaluates schools on how they prepare their students for their next steps. The metric now factors students’ college, career, military, and workforce readiness (CCMWR) into a school or district’s overall rating.
This year marks the first time the CCMWR metric counts toward the overall rating.
The following is a breakdown of Fredericktown’s district report card and comments from Superintendent Gary Chapman.

Chapman chimes in
Fredericktown improved its Progress, Gap Closing and Graduation metrics by a star in comparison to its last report card.
Chapman said the following about the metrics.
“Through the work of our District Leadership Team, we’ve focused on refining the alignment and support of K–12 literacy and language instruction, strengthening our shared systems to support student achievement, and increasing rigor through more reading, writing, and discussion in every classroom,” he said.
“These efforts have helped drive gains in student progress and gap closing, and while our graduation rate dipped slightly from last year, we are proud to have earned five stars for our 98.1% graduation rate.”
Chapman’s plans to build on this recent report card’s metrics include further strengthening literacy instruction, expanding opportunities in engineering, manufacturing, and STEAM across the K–12 curriculum, and supporting every student’s pathway through graduation.
“We’re proud of the growth reflected in this year’s state report card, which is a credit to the hard work of our students, teachers, and staff.”
