Melvin L. Hoar, age 87, of Mount Vernon passed away on Friday, August 29, 2025, at the Whispering Hills Care Center with his loving family at his side.

He was born on December 11, 1937, in Mount Vernon to the late Alfred and Olive (Baker) Hoar. Melvin was employed for over 40 years at Continental Can where he was a machinist. He was a life member of the Ebenezer United Methodist Church. He was an avid skier and enjoyed boating. Melvin was an outdoors enthusiast and enjoyed growing his garden.

Attending auctions, antique picking, listening to classic country music and yodeling were also activities Melvin was known to appreciate. But most of all, he loved attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, his Cleveland Browns, his Ohio State Buckeyes, and Nascar. Melvin was also a veteran serving in the United States Army.

He is survived by his daughters, Pamela (Mark) Sheasby, Patricia Woods; eight grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by his wife, of over 51 years, Margaret Sue Hoar; his son Stephen Hoar, and his granddaughter Rebecca Ann Sheasby.

The family will observe a private graveside service in Ebenezer Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Ebenezer United Methodist Church or the Knox County Humane Society.
