FREDERICKTOWN — Sweat bees weren’t the only thing swarming under the Friday night lights at Fredericktown Stadium.

While the Freddies came out a little flat to begin Coach Scott Spitler’s first game at the helm, their fast-paced offense couldn’t be stopped in the second half as they flew past Highland 21-6 in their season opener.

“We weren’t perfect tonight, we had a lot of Week One adrenaline rush, mental mistakes,” Spitler said.

“But, I kept telling the kids all week and during halftime we just got to keep playing the next play; flush a bad play, play the next play and play for each other.”

High flying Freddie offense

Despite losing a fumble on their first offensive drive, Fredericktown stuck to the running back and quarterback keeper ground game for most of the first half.

The first, and only, points in the first half didn’t come until the 5-minute mark of the second quarter as Cirk Parker barreled past the pylons.

The second half was almost all Freddies, except for a 52-yard pass from Highland quarterback Zachary Church that led to a 7-yard quarterback keeper touchdown for him a few plays later.

But after a failed two-point conversion, Fredericktown ripped away the Scots’ momentum and commanded the scoreboard for the rest of the bout.

The highlight of the game was a 76-yard rushing touchdown from Brode Davis that put the Freddies up 14-6 with about 8 minutes to go in the third quarter.

Following the Davis touchdown, Fredericktown successfully recovered an onside kick, keeping the offense on the field at Highland’s 31-yard line. That led to yet another scoring drive when quarterback Blake Sipes found Davis in the end zone for a 13-yard completion and Davis’ second score of the night, making the final score 21-6.
