MOUNT VERNON — Here’s a photo sure to make a few mouths water from memories. It’s a picture of The Donut Hole, a long-time Mount Vernon shop, seen here when it was on the square.

The picture was donated to the Knox Time collection by Richard Dice, who identifies the two ladies on the left, standing in front of what can just be recognized as the movie theater, as his mother-in-law, Helen Mellott, and his wife’s grandmother, Edna Geiman. The women were visiting from Hanover, Pennsylvania.

At the time, Dice and his wife, Janet, were running the shop.

According to Dice, the shop started on East Ohio Avenue, then moved to the square when he started trucking. Dice and his wife sold the business to Larry Bowers, who moved it first to the shopping center, then to South Main Street before it closed.

Several commenters on the Knox Time Facebook page reminisced about the glazed donuts, dried on wooden dowels near the front door, and triangle-shaped cream-filled donuts. Just beyond the Donut Hole is Paul’s Flowers and the Knox County Savings Bank.
