Roberta Mae Simmons, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed peacefully surrounded by the love of her family. Born on February 9, 1946, to Ina and Miles Shackelford, Roberta grew up in a home full of laughter with her two younger brothers, George and Bill — for whom she proudly called herself their “favorite sister.”

A graduate of Champion High School’s Class of 1964, Roberta went on to study secretarial science at Eastern Nazarene College. Following her graduation, a simple suggestion from her aunt and uncle led her to apply for a job at the newly established Mount Vernon Nazarene College — a decision that would shape the rest of her life. It was there, while living in an apartment owned by Betty Winand, that Roberta met Betty’s nephew, Donnie Simmons. The two fell in love and were married on May 20, 1972.

Roberta and Donnie built a beautiful life together, raising two cherished children, JoLee and David. While Mount Vernon Nazarene College became Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU), Roberta’s presence remained a steady and faithful constant. She proudly served the MVNU community for 50 years as one of the longest tenured employees. She spent her career lovingly serving the MVNU community, calling it her “mission field.” Her work was more than a job—it was a calling. She poured her heart into every interaction, embodying the love described in 1 Corinthians 13: patient, kind, enduring, and full of grace.

Those who knew Roberta will remember her radiant smile, her boundless kindness, and the way her spirit could light up a room. She touched countless lives—on campus, in her church, and especially within her family, whom she adored.

Roberta is survived by her dedicated husband, Donnie; her devoted daughter, JoLee; her treasured grandchildren: Micayla (Zach) Zeltman, Victoria (Zach) Eley, Camden Carrier, Maecie Carrier, Skylar Simmons, Logan Simmons, and Brenyn Craig; her great-grandchildren, Aelin and Maverick; her siblings George (Marsha) Shackelford and Bill (Beth) Shackelford, in addition to numerous incredible cousins, nieces, nephews, and steadfast friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved son, David, and her son-in-law, Jason.

Roberta was a rare and irreplaceable soul. Her compassion and joy left a mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her. While our hearts ache in her absence, we are forever grateful for the example she set and the love she so freely gave. Heaven gained one of the very best.

Services in her honor will be held on Sunday, July 27th, 2025, at Lakeholm Church of the Nazarene beginning at 3 p.m. Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. at the church. Pastors Robert Morrison and Brian Westover will be officiating. Services will be live stream and a link will follow in the coming days to join.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the funeral home where funds will be used to create a Nazarene mission scholarship in her name.
