MOUNT VERNON — Cooler than normal temperatures did not deter a few hardy youngsters from enjoying Captain Hunter’s Landing, the newest addition to Riverside Park.

The splash pad officially opened on Saturday, May 24, in time for Memorial Day weekend.

Community members’ number one request when the city created its parks master plan in 2021 was a splash pad.

The splash pad is within easy walking distance of Armand Fernandes’ home on Fountain Street. His 8-year-old daughter couldn’t wait to get in the water.

“It’s great for the community,” Fernandes said. “It gives the kids something to do. It keeps my kid off of her iPad and lets her have some fun and interact and get along with people.”

Fernandes said they frequently come to Riverside Park and play. They also swim in the Kokosing River and visit Memorial and Ariel-Foundation parks.

“We’re glad to have this [splash pad]. This is going to be great for the kids this summer. This is going to be a great, great time for them,” he said.

The city first started discussing a splash pad in 2023. Preliminary discussions included an enclosed pavilion managed by the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County.

However, the library withdrew from the proposal due to cost. A pavilion and pump house replaced the library building.

Ariel Corp. pledged $1.315 million in April 2024 but stipulated that the city complete construction by May 11, 2025.

Ariel’s donation included a 10-year commitment to cover maintenance costs at $15,000 a year.

Captain Hunter’s Landing honors the late Hunter Wright, former president of Ariel Corp.

The splash pad area includes heated family restrooms that are open year-round and handicap accessible. Parents can sit under the pavilion and watch their children play on two playgrounds and the splash pad.
