DANVILLE — Danville’s graduating Class of 2025 honored their beloved 5th grade teacher with a heartfelt surprise visit on May 16.
Just after the final graduation rehearsal, the Danville High School Class of 2025 took a special trip that wasn’t mandatory and not listed on any itinerary.
Dressed in their caps and gowns, by their request the seniors boarded a bus not for a field trip or a celebration but for something far more meaningful. Led by their Principal Mrs. McCann, Class Advisor Mikalyn Huffman and staff member Emily Miller they made their way by school bus to visit someone who had left a lasting imprint on their lives, their former fifth grade teacher, Gayle Ruse.
Ruse, who spent many years shaping young minds, was forced into retirement after several
bouts with cancer. Eighteen years ago, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was in
remission until two years ago when she was diagnosed with lung cancer. A year ago, it spread to another part of her lung and now she has stage 4 brain cancer.
As the bus pulled up and the seniors stepped off, the atmosphere shifted from excitement to emotion. One by one, they filed into her driveway with proud smiles and tearful eyes. Mrs. Ruse, visibly moved and overwhelmed with joy as she stepped out of her house, greeted them with disbelief and a heart full of love for the kindness that they wanted to return to her.
The visit was more than just a surprise; it was a tribute. The seniors presented Mrs. Ruse with a flamingo that was signed by all the seniors. She loves flamingos and referred to her class of students as her “flock.”
Hugs, laughter and tears were shared freely as they recalled their time together in the fifth grade and the unwavering kindness, she showed every student who walked through her door.
As the seniors boarded the bus once again, the legacy of Gayle Ruse will live on in every life she touched.
For the Class of 2025, their final trip together wasn’t just a goodbye, it was a full-circle moment of appreciation, honor and display of kindness.
