MOUNT VERNON — For over 10 years the United Way of Knox County’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program has done more than prepare taxes — it has changed lives.

In 2025, the program helped 517 local residents file their 2024 tax returns, bringing $595,922 in federal refunds back to those who need it most.

From single parents working multiple jobs to seniors living on fixed incomes, many Knox County families rely on their tax refund to cover essentials like rent, groceries, medical bills, or childcare.

Thanks to the VITA program, participants saved $103,400 in tax preparation fees — money that stays in the community.

Now in its second decade, the VITA program continues to provide free, IRS-certified tax
help low- and middle-income households, while connecting them to financial tools like budgeting support, savings programs, and debt management resources.

This year’s results included:

  • $165,470 in Earned Income Credit
  • $57,916 in Child Tax Credit
  • $11,005 in Education Credits
  • Average taxpayer income: $29,927

Over half of all returns — 292 in total — were from seniors, who received $247,516 in refunds and saved $58,400 in preparation costs.

The heart of the program is its people. Seven trained volunteers and five staff preparers helped make this program successful.

“Volunteering with the United Way of Knox County through the VITA program has been very rewarding,” said Richard Ellis, a first-time VITA volunteer.

“United Way gave us all the training we needed, and you really feel a connection to the people you’re helping. You see right away how much it matters.”

United Way makes it easy for anyone, whether they have a background in taxes or not, to volunteer and make a difference during tax season.
