Those with fairer skin color have higher risk factors for melanoma. The overall lifetime risk for melanoma is approximately 1 in 33 individuals. Each person’s risk varies. As we age, the risk increases for those in their mid-60s and even those in their 30s. Because of this risk, it’s essential to talk to your provider about a discolored mole (brown, black, red, blue), misshapen (notched or ragged), asymmetrical (one-half of the mole or birthmark doesn’t match the other side), or oozing, bleeding sores that won’t heal.
