MANSFIELD — He’ll be remembered as one of the best players in program history, but Kyevi Roan’s place on the list of Mansfield Senior’s all-time greats is still up for debate.
Senior High coach Marquis Sykes insists the newly-crowned North Central Ohio Player of the Year belongs on the short-list of Mansfield Senior luminaries.
“Arguably, he’s a top-10 Tyger of all-time,” Sykes said of Roane after his final game, a Division III district-semifinal loss to eventual regional champ Sandusky.
Roane capped his stellar career with 1,198 points, fifth on Senior High’s all-time list. He averaged team-highs of 14.8 points, 8.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists a game. Roane took over as the primary point guard this year and never looked back.
“I like having the ball in my hands,” he said during the regular season. “I feel comfortable handling the ball more.”
The 6-foot-1 Roane led the Tygers to a runner-up finish in the Ohio Cardinal Conference. He was selected the OCC’s Player of the Year and was a District 6 and Northwest District first-team pick in Division III.
Roane is the floor general of the 10-man All-North Central Ohio team. Here’s a look at the others:
Brayden DeVito, Shelby
A Division I football recruit and first-team All-Ohio quarterback, DeVito averaged 19.1 points and 3.1 assists a game. The 5-foot-11 junior was a Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference first-team pick and the District 6 Player of the Year in Division IV. DeVito was also selected the Northwest District Co-Player of the Year.
Justice Thompson, Crestview
The 6-foot-3 senior is Crestview’s career scoring king with 1,536 career points. He averaged 23.5 points a game and helped the Cougars reach the district championship game. Thompson was the Northwest District Player of the Year in Division VI and a District 6 first-teamer.
Davion Mack, Mansfield Christian
A rangy 6-foot-3 guard, Mack averaged 19 points a game in leading the Flames to a runner-up finish in the Mid-Buckeye Conference. He was the MBC Player of the Year and selected to the District 6 first team and Northwest District first team in Division VI.
Seven Allen, Lexington
A 5-foot-10 junior, Allen rarely came off the floor and averaged a team-best 13 points, 3.7 assists and 1.8 steals a game. Lexington won an outright Ohio Cardinal Conference crown and Allen was an OCC first-teamer. He was also selected to the District 6 and Northwest District first team in Division III.
Garett Hotz, Clear Fork
A 6-foot-4 senior forward, Hotz tied for the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference scoring lead with Shelby’s Brayden DeVito, averaging 19.1 points a game. Hotz ranked second in the MOAC in rebounding, averaging 8.4 boards a game. He was a MOAC first-team pick and a Division IV first-teamer on the District 6 and Northwest District teams.
Joe Caudill, Lexington
The 6-foot-5 junior helped lead Lex to its third straight Ohio Cardinal Conference crown and a district runner-up finish. Caudill averaged 12.7 points and a team-best 7.9 rebounds a game. He was an OCC first-team pick and a District 6 and Northwest District second-teamer in Division III.
Scotty Hickey, Mapleton
The Firelands Conference Player of the Year, Hickey averaged an area-high 26.7 points a game and dropped a season-high 42 in a tournament loss to McDonald. The 6-foot senior sharpshooter is Mapleton’s all-time scoring leader with 1,543 career points. He was a Northeast Inland first-team pick in Division VI and a District 4.
Bradey Krichbaum, Hillsdale
The 6-foot-6 senior center averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds a game, leading the Falcons to their first district title since 2001. Krichbaum was a Northeast Inland first-team pick in Division VII and a District 4 first-teamer.
Gavin Toombs, Fredericktown
A rugged 6-foot-5, 225-pound junior forward, Toombs scored his 1,000th career point in a sectional final victory over Mount Gilead. The Division I tight end prospect averaged 17.5 points and 6.9 rebounds a game, leading the Freddies to an outright Knox Morrow Athletic Conference crown. He was a KMAC first-teamer and a Central District second-team pick in Division V.
