Nancy A. Black, 89, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2025. She was born on September 20, 1935, in Zanesville, Ohio, to the late Clifford and Edna (Giffin) Black.
Nancy was a 1953 graduate of Fredericktown High School, Mt. Vernon Business School, OIP (Ohio Institute of Photography) and completed several correspondence courses covering many subjects. Her working career included The Ohio State University, Battelle Memorial Institute which included a year in Viet Nam working on “The Junk Blue Book” and an additional year in Viet Nam working for Simulmatics Corporation out of New York. She returned to the States in 1968 and began a career using her talents as a journalist and photographer.
Nancy dedicated her life to service, both to her country and her community. She proudly served in the United States Army as a stenographer, achieving the rank of E4. A true patriot, she remained actively involved with AMVETS and WAC Veterans, always supporting her fellow service-members.
Beyond her military service, Nancy was a woman of many talents and passions. She was an accomplished photographer owning her own studio, Dixie Studio, She contributed to the and was the director of the Dixie Production, involved with the local Art Guild, and a compassionate volunteer with Hospice of Knox County. As the editor of Fredericktown News, she had a keen eye for storytelling and a deep love for journalism. Nancy had a remarkable ability to master any challenge she set her mind to, earning the admiration of all who knew her.
She is survived by her brother, John (Elizabeth) Black; sisters, Susan Bynner and Cheryl Morey; nine nieces and nephews which include Kathryn (Black) Davis, Michael Black, Rebecca (Black) Fitterer, William (Fred) Bynner, Stephanie (Bynner) Middlestead, Dale Bynner, Heather (Morey) Kemp, Heidi (Morey) Culver, and Gavin Morey; nineteen great nieces and nephews; eleven great-great nieces and nephews and numerous cousins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers-in-law, William Bynner and William Morey.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at a visitation on Monday, February 24, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road in Mount Vernon, with a service to follow at 12:00 PM.
Nancy’s legacy of service, creativity, and dedication will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
