MOUNT VERNON — A new high school gym floor will likely be ready by the 2025-26 school at Mount Vernon City Schools.
The district’s board of education unanimously approved two separate contracts connected to the gym floor at Monday’s meeting. The deals total $371,982.
The project is being funded with the district’s permanent improvement funds, superintendent Bill Seder said.
Before the new wooden floor is installed, general contractor Lepi Enterprises, contract of $135,982, will remove the existing wooden floor, along with the tartan below it.
A reason for the original floor being removed is because of dips caused by disks placed under the wooden floor for support, Seder said. Those disks, Seder said, have deteriorated over time with the original tartan flooring under it.
The original tartan gym floor was replaced in the early ’90s with a wooden floor, Seder said.
Due to the presence of mercury in the tartan, Seder stated that Lepi Enterprises will remove it and inspect the concrete base for the material as well.
If mercury is found, it will need to be disposed of at a hazardous material waste site, Seder said.
Final Floor Inc., awarded a $236,000 contract, will install the new gym floor.
