Erin Louise Cordle, 75, of Grandview Heights, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2025 at her home. She was born July 6, 1949 in Columbus to the late Harold and Jacqueline Cordle. Erin will always be remembered as kind, caring, fun-loving, and multi-talented. She was an extraordinary daughter, sister, cousin, aunt, co-worker, friend, and dog mama. Her talents and interests included knitting, class reunions, birthday seasons, puppy dogs, and at different parts of her life, motorcycles, flying airplanes, volleyball, and clowning.
In addition to her parents, Erin was predeceased by aunts Sarah Wolfe and Jean Hobbs; cousins Susan Dango (Paul), Charles Hobbs, and Michael Hobbs; and beloved dogs Bogey, Waltraud Alfalfa, and Miss Teschmacher.
She is survived by siblings Christopher Cordle (Susan) and Jacqueline Ann Cordle; nephew Andrew Cordle (April); niece Ammie Zitello (David); grandniece Alexandra Cordle; grandnephew Torin Zitello; cousins William Cordle (Judy), Marilyn Cordle, Jill Phillips (Mike), William Wolfe (Maribeth), and David Wolfe (Christina); and many special friends and cherished colleagues.
Erin graduated from Centerburg High School (’67), Ashland College (BS, Education), and Loyola University (MS, Religious Education).
Erin was a woman of deep faith whom God called to action. She embraced the vocation and fully allowed Him to use her potential to perform works that assisted and touched an innumerable group of His children. Erin was Associate Director of the Office for Social Concerns of the Catholic Diocese of Columbus, and served as Catholic Campaign for Human Development and Catholic Relief Services director. In this capacity, she worked as an educator and advocate to further the understanding of the Church’s social justice teachings. Erin joined the office in 1998 as the CCHD/CRS coordinator. Erin also administered the diocesan family violence prevention program, Calming the Storm, and was a facilitator for the Protecting God’s Children program. Erin touched many parish social concerns: RCIA programs, the parish school, youth ministry groups, parish women’s clubs, family violence prevention advocacy groups, labor unions, interfaith groups focusing on peace and justice, Latino and Somali community organizations, service providers, and advocacy groups, the Ohio Council of Churches’ disaster readiness and response network, the Franklin County Citizens’ Corps, state and national fair trade advocacy groups. Some of the activities Erin worked on include: domestic violence prevention train-the-trainers and parish response training programs, adult and youth retreats and days of reflection, parish retreats, Salt & Light Leadership Training, public issues forum training, diocesan senior citizens day celebrations, diocesan respect life Masses. Additionally, Erin served on the bishop’s family violence prevention task force and co-edited the diocesan Calming the Storm tool kit and resource guide. She was a member of the clergy and legal/service providers’ forum organizing committees. Erin was also a founding board member of the Jacqueline McCalla Cordle Childrens’ Fund Food Pantry in Centerburg.
Her professional affiliations include: board secretary and finance committee chair of the Latino Empowerment and Outreach Network (LEON), communications chair of the Greater Columbus Workers’ Rights Board, member of the Central Ohio Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice, Ohio Council of Churches’ disaster response network, member of the Ohio Volunteer Organizations Active in a Disaster faith network, board member of the 1st Love USA (African AIDS orphans advocacy and support network), organizing member of the Franklin County Citizens Corps, organizing member of Faith Communities Uniting for Peace, past member of the Share the Vision sight loss support network, member of the Catholic Conference of Ohio’s Department on Social Concerns, member of the diocesan Adult Faith Formation Committee.
The Columbus Metropolitan Area Church Council selected Erin for a “Living Faith” award in 2002. She was a parishioner at the OSU St. Thomas More Newman Center and was a member of the Paulist Associates.
Arrangements were made with Snyder Funeral Homes, DeVore Chapel in Sunbury, Ohio.
A Catholic Funeral Mass will be held at St. Josephine Bakhita Parish, 6077 Sharon Woods Blvd., Columbus on February 13, at 11:00 am. The service will be preceded by a family fellowship time starting at 9:00 am and followed by a fellowship meal served at the Parish.
Interment of ashes at Eastview Cemetery in Centerburg, Ohio will follow at a later date.
