ODOT crews attack the snow every winter in Ohio.

MOUNT VERNON – The Knox County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the Knox County Emergency Management Agency (EMA), would like to remind residents about snow emergency classifications, their implications, and public safety recommendations.

Authority to declare snow emergencies

Under Ohio Revised Code Section 311.07, the county sheriff is authorized to restrict or prohibit motor vehicle travel on county roadways during severe weather events in the interest of public safety.

While the county EMA does not declare snow emergencies, it actively supports the sheriff’s office by sharing updates and coordinating resources to keep the community informed and prepared.

Snow emergency classifications

Level 1 Snow Emergency:
Roadways are hazardous due to blowing and drifting snow, and icy conditions may also be present. Motorists are advised to drive cautiously to prevent accidents or emergencies.

Level 2 Snow Emergency:
Roadways are hazardous with significant blowing and drifting snow and icy conditions. Only individuals with essential travel needs should be on the roads. Motorists are encouraged to contact their employers to confirm work requirements and use extreme caution while driving.

Level 3 Snow Emergency:
All roadways are closed to non-emergency personnel. Travel should be limited to essential journeys or personal emergencies only. Employers should be contacted to determine reporting requirements. Motorists found driving in these conditions without just cause may be subject to arrest under this classification.

Community safety reminder

Residents are urged to stay updated on snow emergency declarations by tuning into local news outlets, social media pages for the sheriff’s office, Knox County Ohio 911, or county EMA, or by signing up for Knox Alerts (https://entry.inspironlogistics.com/knox_co_oh/wens.cfm). Always prioritize safety by heeding these guidelines and staying off the roads unless absolutely necessary during severe conditions.

Collaboration for community preparedness

The Knox County Emergency Management Agency and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office are committed to keeping residents informed and prepared during winter weather events. Together, we can ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in the community.
