John Paul Haynes Jr, age 73, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. He was born on June 27, 1951, to the late John and Eileen (Sprowls) Haynes Sr.
Paul spent his childhood in New Jersey and graduated from Colonia High School. He was a member of the Track and Field Team and ran for distance and speed. His father Paul, became a scout master of Troop 45 in Woodbridge New Jersey, guiding both of his sons to the status of Eagle Scout. Paul earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture from North Carolina State University.
Paul designed office spaces in Washington D.C and Hawaii and even designed the first land-based Casino in New Orleans. He found his true calling upon moving to Columbus, Ohio, and establishing InterActive Group Inc. During this stage of his career, Paul completed over 38 projects in eleven states, focusing on nature centers, science centers, art and history museums and metro parks. While his experiential exhibits appear as entertainment, inducing laughter and play, his project research and deep understanding of people was ultimately about designs to spark curiosity and creativity in others.
Paul is survived by his adoring wife, Debra (Henwood) Haynes; a son, John Paul Haynes III; a brother, Alan (Ryan) Haynes; and a nephew, Tanner Haynes.
One of Paul’s most legendary designs is frequently noted, 10 years after its debut, as one of the best free things to do for families in Columbus. Paul and his family would encourage you to explore the Living Stream at Battelle Darby Creek Nature Center, visit Blacklick Woods, and Highbanks Nature Center and Hocking Hills visitor center, or any number of exhibits in Ohio, Louisiana, Nebraska, Florida, Kansas, Michigan and Ohio.
The family was well cared for by Dr. Arjun Mittra.
Memorial contributions may be made to: The James Cancer in Columbus, Ohio.
A celebration of life service will take place at a later date.
