Sheryl Lynn Scott was born on the 11th day of December in 1954 to Glenna Dawson and Harold Brewer. She passed away Monday, November 4, 2024, at the age of sixty-nine surrounded by her family that are going to miss her tremendously.
After being a stay-at-home mom for twelve years Sheryl moved three children and herself to Mount Vernon and began volunteering at New Directions battered women’s shelter. It became clear that helping women and children quickly became her destiny. She was employed at New Directions and continued her employment for over 30 years, as a court advocate for her clients.
Sheryl was so much more than a court advocate. She was a fierce and stern but loving and nurturing sound board for women and children who were scared and not allowed to have a voice. You could never pull one over on her. Nothing ever surprised her because she heard it all. She was strict- in a good way! She exuded strength, courage, and led by example. She helped calm people down and stay focused and be logical not emotional. Even if Sheryl had struggles of her own, she always had an ear to lend for listening and a shoulder to cry on as well as comforting hugs.
She changed the lives of several women and children in Knox and surrounding counties. Her family is the most important part of her life! She poured everything she had and more into her family. She was protective, realistic, and devoted to keeping the family together. Once in the family you were always a part of the family. Fiercely protective as a Momma Bear! She instilled work ethic, loyalty, love, and devotion into her children and grandchildren. She leaves behind a legacy of strength, courage, ambition, and overall compassion and empathy for all.
