MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Community Band and Knox Community Jazz Orchestra are joining forces to present “Movies and Jazz!” a concert that has something for everyone.

The concert is slated for Saturday, Sept. 28, at 6 p.m. at The Woodward Opera House. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted at the door. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Community members are invited to listen as the Mount Vernon Community Band performs music from popular TV and movie favorites. Hits include The Wizard of Oz, Fantasia 2000, Star Wars, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and many more.

The Knox Community Jazz Orchestra will showcase classic and contemporary big band-style music from across the decades.

The two ensembles will split the donations collected from the concert. The donations will go toward expenses such as venue rentals, music purchases, stands, and percussion equipment.

Running a large ensemble is not cheap, and community support helps the groups perform at a higher level.

However, if someone finds that they don’t have money to spare, we hope they will still come out and enjoy a wonderful evening of music. As a musician, nothing is more satisfying than playing for a crowd.

About the concert groups

This is the first time the ensembles have held a joint concert.

The MVCB was established in 2016. Adam Garlinger has directed the group since 2019.

“I think I speak for both ensembles when I say we’re incredibly excited to bring this concert to the community. We have such a rich arts environment in Mount Vernon, and it is always a joy and a privilege to present the music with so many talented friends,” Garlinger said.

“I hope that we can fill up The Woodward with people that enjoy music as much as we do!”

“I’m very excited to be performing with the jazz band. Our community has so many talented groups and musicians, and we look forward to more partnerships in the future,” Amy Tatz, president of the MVCB, said.

The KCJO was founded in 2017 under the direction of Ted Buehrer.

“We are excited to participate in this collaboration of two community-minded music groups,” Buehrer said.

“KCJO will be playing a variety of older favorites and newer music, including a performance of George Gershwin’s famous Rhapsody in Blue to celebrate its 100th birthday.”
