MOUNT VERNON — It’s been a tough-luck start to the season for the Mount Vernon football team.
The Yellow Jackets fell in Week One on a late touchdown pass at Marion Harding. This week, Newark pulled away from another close encounter, this one at Mount Vernon, by scoring the final 19 points to earn a 36-14 decision.
The Wildcats (2-0) shot out to a 10-0 lead, but Jake Taylor’s TD dash with 5:28 remaining in the half pulled the Yellow Jackets to within 10-7.
Newark enjoyed a 17-7 bulge at intermission, but again Mount Vernon rallied. Junior Mason Richards registered a 34-yard TD pass to close the gap to 17-14 with 10 minutes showing in the third quarter.
But coach Bill Franks’ squad controlled the action after that.
Wildcats’ quarterback Bodie Smith threw for 311 yards and three touchdown passes to Drayson Peterson. Kolton Peterson tacked on a pair of scoring runs for the visitors.
Drayson Peterson had nine catches for 261 yards, while Kolton Peterson ran for 127 yards on 19 carries.
The Yellow Jackets (0-2) managed 261 yards of offense. Mount Vernon will host Delaware Hayes next week.
