Howard E. Workman, age 76, of Gambier, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 13, 1948, in Mount Vernon, Ohio, the son of Howard Elden and Leota (Cline) Workman. Howard was a 1966 graduate of Mount Vernon High School and later earned his undergraduate in Agricultural Tech and master’s degree in education from The Ohio State University.

Howard retired in 2000 after 31 years of teaching and serving as a school administrator at the Knox County Career Center. He loved his job and Howard always took great pride in helping kids find their way in life. Nothing meant more to him than a former student still referring to him as Mr. Workman, or a simple thanks for being there. Although he loved his job and students, Howard will still be remembered as “Head Butt Kicker.”

When he was not an educator, Howard loved spending time working on his farm. Farming or tinkering on something was a wonderful way to spend his summers. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4027, Hopewell United Methodist Church, and Retired Teachers Association.

Howard is survived by his wife Candy (Kelly) Workman, whom he married in 2011, a stepdaughter, Theresa Vernon, and her daughter Edith (Trey Cummins) Vernon, three sisters, Judy Stringfellow, Shelley (Leo) Armstrong, Mary Lou (Ray) Neighbarger, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Carol (Laymon) Workman in 2006, and two brothers, Tom Workman, and Robert McCracken.

The family will observe a private graveside service in Brandon Cemetery. The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home of Mount Vernon is honored to serve the family of Howard E. Workman.

Memorial contributions in Howard’s name may be made to the Hopewell United Methodist Church.
