MOUNT VERNON — The Knox County commissioners passed a resolution on Tuesday to apply for CDBG money for the Danville bike trail connector project.
The Community Development Block Grant application is due June 12.
Jillian Flowers, associate planner with CDC of Ohio, said the estimated project cost is $141,568.
The CDBG allocation grant totals $158,000. Of that, $126,400 will go toward trail improvements and $31,600 toward administrative costs.
Officials are still working out the details of covering the $15,198 engineering/design cost.
The goal is to connect the Kokosing Gap Trail with the Mohican Valley Trail. Cyclists will exit the KGT, travel north on Richards Street to Tilton Street, and then east to South Market Street.
Cyclists will cross over at 502 S. Market St., the site of a former quilt shop. The village bought the property in 2022, and the Knox County Land Bank demolished the dilapidated structure as part of the long-range plan for a trail connector.
After crossing South Market, the trail skirts what will become the Thomas Cottrell Memorial Pavilion.
The project includes relocating and refurbishing the historic Mile Creek Road bridge. The bridge will span the east branch of Jelloway Creek behind the Danville feed mill.
Phase 2 of the Danville bike trail connector project includes a raised boardwalk over the wetlands area connecting the bridge and the park area.
The state will award the grants in August. If the county receives the $158,000 grant, work must be completed by August 2026.
