MOUNT VERNON — This year marks the 175th year of the Knox County Fair, which traces its beginnings to the first county-wide agricultural fair, held on October 23 and 24, 1849.
According to the Democratic Banner newspaper, “Yesterday and today were the days fixed upon by the Agricultural Society of Knox County for the display of Horses, Cattle, Sheep, Hogs, &c, &c. Yesterday was a fine day, and the farmers of Knox County turned out in large numbers. We believe that it was the first thing of its kind ever introduced in this place.”
Present and past Knox County Fair Board members will present the illustrated story of these 175 years of growth and change on Wednesday evening, June 5, at the Knox County Historical Society Museum.
The museum is at 875 Harcourt Road in Mount Vernon. The program starts at 7:30 and is free and open to the public.
All persons interested in area history are invited to attend. Visitors can come early or stay after the program to tour the museum or chat with the program presenters. For more information, call the museum at 740-393-5247.
