MOUNT VERNON — After years in the making, Experience Mount Vernon’s art mural project is underway.

Passers-by at the intersection of South Mulberry St./West High St. may have noticed a green dragon surrounded by a shelf of multicolored books at a utility box on Monday, May 9.

Local artist Emily Morrison completed the eye-catching piece.

Experience Mount Vernon’s art council began planning the utility-box exhibit in December 2021, director Lacey Filkins said, with each piece having a distinct theme.

Morrison’s piece focused on early childhood literature, Filkins said. Artists submitted three permanent art pieces in the Spring/Summer of 2022.

Another piece by Alexandra Stevens will focus on the “spirit of Mount Vernon and community,” Filkins said, which will be revealed in the summer.

The third piece is patriotic-themed by John Donnelly and will be placed near the Memorial Walk section of Public Square in the fall.

Filkins said supply chain issues caused a backup of materials, delaying the community-driven project.

“We finally got the correct vinyl and had it printed,” she said.

After three years, Filkins is glad the project is nearly complete.

“It feels really good,” Filkins said. “And we’re very pleased with the outcome, how it looks, and what it will bring to downtown.”
