MOUNT VERNON – It’s a joyful, toe-tapping Memorial Day Weekend tradition.
Once again, the Knox Community Jazz Orchestra will welcome in the summer season at Ariel Foundation Park. Celebrating its seventh year, the talented 20-member ensemble will perform on Sunday, May 27, at the park’s Schnormeier Event Center.
The free concert begins at 4:30 p.m. Guests may bring their own chairs for seating.
More information is available on the park’s website, arielfoundationpark.org, under Events.
“We love performing at the park,” said band leader and Kenyon music professor Ted
Buehrer, who founded the jazz orchestra in 2017.
“We’re pleased and proud to have such a wonderful venue in our community and have always enjoyed performing there.”
A highlight of this performance will be an arrangement of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, which in 2024 is celebrating 100 years since its premiere.
Arguably Gershwin’s best-known composition, this arrangement was prepared by Billy Strayhorn for the Duke Ellington Orchestra.
Other tunes, including “Corner Pocket,” “Londonderry Air,” “Take the ‘A’ Train,” and several others, will provide variety and will keep toes tapping throughout the afternoon.
