MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon’s valiant comeback bid fell just short.

The ninth-seeded Yellow Jackets rallied late, but came up shy in a 6-5 loss to No. 10 Tri-Valley in a Division I district semifinal softball game Tuesday at Mount Vernon.

The Yellow Jackets gave up a run in the top of the first and three in the third, falling behind 4-0. Mount Vernon cut the deficit to 4-3 with a run in the home half of the third and two in the fourth.

The Jackets had the potential tying run at second in the bottom of the seventh, but a popout ended it.

Rylee Myers was 3-for-3 with two walks, a run scored and a run batted in, while Brooklyn Dovenbarger had three hits, including a double. Hailey Rudrick, Keely Pollard, Jocelyn Scarbury and Presli Pope each had a pair of hits. Rudrick, Pollard and Scarbury all drove in runs.

Scarbury was the hard-luck loser. She gave up just four hits and struck out nine in seven innings.

Tri-Valley (22-6) will play either Hilliard Bradley or Big Walnut for the district title at 5 p.m. Friday at Pickerington Central.

Mount Vernon finished the season at 21-8.
