Joseph Roger Barron, age 87, of Mount Vernon, passed away April 29, 2024 at his home surrounded by his children. He was born January 14, 1937 in Hamden, Ohio. He was the son of Rothbe and Leota Barron.

Roger was a graduate of Hamden High school. Afterward, he enlisted in the Air Force and served in Korea from 1954-1957. Following his military service, Roger graduated from the Hobart Institute of Welding in Troy, Ohio and worked many years as a skilled, industrial welder. He married the love of his life in 1960. In 1964 Roger became a Columbus Police Officer where he worked for 33 years until retirement. He worked the two-wheel motorcycle squad, freeway patrol, and finished his career as a pilot in the CPD helicopter division. Roger was a Scoutmaster with New Albany Troop 450 for over 10 years. He led numerous scout trips to the National Jamboree, and also several high adventure trips to the Florida Sea Base and Philmont Scout Ranch. He was awarded the Silver Beaver Award in 1980 for his contributions to Scouting. He was a Mason, and an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Mount Vernon Chapter #236. Roger was an accomplished bee keeper for many years and sold honey at the Mt. Vernon Farmers Market. Roger was an avid motorcyclist, and toured all 50 states, all 10 provinces of Canada and parts of Mexico by bike with his beloved CPD buddies. In his retirement he and his wife Anita enjoyed traveling, and toured abroad many times to Europe and Australia.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister and wife of 57 years, Anita Barron.

He is survived by two sons Dan (Heather) Barron of Naples, Florida and Mike (Kathi Baker) Barron of The Villages, Florida; one daughter Jenny (Brad) Priest of Pataskala; eight grandchildren, Christine, Alex, Ashley, Katie, Will, Jack, Annemarie and Zoie; one sister Jane (Melvin) Libby of Hamden and a host of loving family and friends.

Immediate family will be holding a private celebration of Roger’s life.
