GAMBIER — Gambier Village Council is expected to update its food truck ordinance.
Gambier council members spent Monday’s council meeting introducing what changes it would like to see for food truck permits, how many trucks can be in the village at a time, and more.
Complaints from village residents included flashing lights on food trucks, loud generators, and the effects on local businesses.
Gambier food truck vendor Rick Cantrell said the flashing lights attached to his truck are off, though he’s not sure what can be done about the generator’s noise levels.
The village’s food truck permit currently allows trucks to be in Gambier seven days a week if the operators choose. There are two permits, each is $75. One permit runs Monday through Thursday; the other Friday through Sunday.
One truck can operate between Monday and Thursday, while two trucks can Friday through Sunday.
Currently, the ordinance doesn’t require truck owners to notify when they plan their operation days.
Food truck permits also run on a “first-come, first-serve” basis, which is allocated on Mondays.
Councilmember Liz Forman said the $75 permit shouldn’t change. She’s worried an increase would cause fewer trucks to operate throughout the week.
The ordinance allows trucks to be placed at The Village Market loading zone, which is expected to be removed in the upcoming ordinance change.
Council agreed food truck zoning needs to be enforced, wondering if a truck suspension period should happen if not followed.
The ordinance will be further discussed at the streets and utilities committee on April 29.
