MOUNT VERNON — Over 2,000 tires were collected at the Tire Take Back event on March 30 in Mount Vernon.
The event was open to all Knox County residents. It was hosted by the City of Mount Vernon, DKMM Solid Waste District and Knox County Recycling and Litter Prevention.
Though both tire collection bins were full before the event ended, Mayor Matt Starr decided to continue to collect tires, recycling and litter prevention program manager Matt Baugher said.
The City of Mount Vernon and Knox Recycling and Litter Prevention will provide additional funds for tire containers. Baugher said cities, villages and townships can apply to host future events on DKMM.org.
“These events are not guaranteed and residents are encouraged to pay to have tires recycled when new ones are purchased,” Baugher said.
Local tire shops throughout the county will take them for a small fee. Full list available on dkmm.org and co.knox.oh.us.
Tires are collected and end up at Liberty Tire Recycling in Grove City.
The tires will be converted to commercial and retail products for asphalt, fuel, playgrounds and landscaping.
