Lewis Lee Canter, age 77, of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Thursday January 18, 2024. He was born December 29, 1946, in Barton, Ohio, to the late Milton Eugene and Dorothy Mae (Kelly) Canter. In 1965, Lewis graduated from St. Clairsville High School. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. On July 12, 1969, he married his wife of 54 years, Mary Ann.

Lewis is survived by his wife Mary Ann; children, Michelle (Wil) Duffy, Lewis W. (Heather) Canter; grandchildren, Makayla (Jordun) Bailey, Claire Duffy, Dalton Canter, Treva (Scott) Hurler; great-grandchildren Rosie, Lena, and Easton; sisters Geri (Merritt) Christy, Myra (Barry) Topolski, Cheryl (Jerry) Martin; brothers Ray (Sandra) Canter, Cloyce Canter; many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Jean (George) Imer and brother Charles (Debbie) Canter; brothers-in-law George Imer, Merritt Christy; niece Tiffany Topolski; nephew Kevin Imer.

Lewis engineered, designed and installed voice, data, and fiber in the telecommunications industry. He started out as an installer for the phone company, and later went on to owning his own subcontracting company. In his “retirement” he worked for Knox Area Transit (KAT).

Lewis enjoyed time spent with his family at the evening dinner table or out on the patio. Holidays were set aside as a special time to continue with the old family traditions. He always held deep in his heart the many times his family, siblings, nieces and nephews, spent having picnics at his home, never passing up good food or any dessert. His wife and children played and worked together, and as the grandchildren came along, they were included, instilling good work ethics that he was so proud of that they had been taught.

Drag racing was his hobby. Weekends were spent at the racetrack with dad. Most recently he has enjoyed building and riding in his “buggy”. He had a love for cars and that “new car smell”.

The Canter family will receive family and friends from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Saturday January 27, 2024, at the Snyder Funeral Home-Lasater Chapel, 11337 Upper Gilchrist Rd, Mt. Vernon, Ohio. A prayer service will begin at 3:00 PM, led by Deacon Tim Birie. Family and friends are welcome to share a meal after the prayer service hosted in the funeral home community room.

Lewis loved the unique personalities of his dogs and cats. Memorial contributions may be made in Lewis’s memory to the Knox County Dog Shelter or the Knox County Humane Society (cat shelter).
