MOUNT VERNON – A coach with years of experience in Division II playoffs will join the Mount Vernon football program as its new head coach.

Former Teays Valley head coach Mark Weber was approved by the Mount Vernon School Board on Monday to take the position recently vacated by Jay Campbell.

Weber, who lives in Knox County, ran Teays Valley for nine seasons, leaving after the 2022 season.

He amassed a 60-32 record, including five Mid-State League Buckeye Division titles, four playoff appearances and just one losing season. Weber was named Division II Central District Coach of the Year in 2014.

Prior to his head-coaching stint, Weber had been an assistant under Teays Valley head coach Steve Evans, who left to become athletic director at Amanda-Clearcreek.

“(Weber’s) experience, passion, intensity and proven success is exactly what Mount Vernon football and our programs are searching for,” Mount Vernon High School Activities Director Justin Sanford said in a statement.

“I’m excited for Mark to get started this week and look forward to seeing the excitement his program is going to bring on Friday nights.”

Campbell left the Mount Vernon program in December after two seasons. The Yellow Jackets were 3-17 with Campbell at the helm.

After Campbell stepped down, Sanford assembled a committee to search for a new coach. Sanford said there were 35 applicants for the position, but Weber was unanimously selected by the committee.

Weber’s wife, Kati, is also a school teacher. They have two sons, Lucas, 9, and Archie, 4.

“We are excited to begin our journey as Mount Vernon Jackets,” Weber said in a statement to Knox Pages. “Football stands for much more than just the game. It stands for excellence in academics and athletics as a whole.

“My sons understand (that) how you do anything is how you do everything. Now, I have 80 new sons to look over and care for. This responsibility will be held in the highest regard.”

Weber, a graduate of Capital University, is expected to begin offseason coaching responsibilities immediately.
