GAMBIER — Gambier’s administration is expected to apply for a transportation alternative program grant (TAP) dedicated for raised crosswalks on Wiggin Street.
Gambier council approved the resolution at Monday’s council meeting, giving village administrator R.C. Wise the ‘OK’ on applying for the Ohio Dept. of Transportation grant.
The project, if accepted, would cost around $350,000 — 95% via the TAP grant. The village would be responsible for just five percent of the cost.
The Wiggin Street crosswalk, between College Park Street and S. Acland Street, would be raised to create bump outs, hoping to decrease speeding and create a safer intersection.
“The goal is to slow people down,” village administrator R.C. Wise said.
A pedestrian was struck at the crosswalk in June, where they were taken to the hospital and recovered, Wise said.
If the project is completed, Wise said he expects drainage options for storm water will need to be considered, due to the raised crosswalk.
The deadline for the application is Jan. 31, Wise said, and if the grant is accepted construction would begin in 2025.
Also at council, Mayor Leeman Kessler and council members Alison Furlong and Morgan Giles were sworn in. Giles was appointed as council president by fellow members.
