HOWARD – Winter’s chill won’t be as biting for many in this community, thanks to the efforts of the fourth-grade student council at East Knox Elementary School.

Students began their “mitten tree” campaign several weeks ago, collecting new or homemade mittens, gloves, hats and scarves in adult and child sizes.

Scores of items were donated for those in need.

The winter apparel will be part of East Knox Local Schools’ Christmas food distribution immediately after school on Tuesday.

Community residents who have registered will assemble in a vehicle line along the junior/ senior high school to receive food and, if needed, hats, mittens, gloves and scarves.

Eligible recipients who are unable to go to the school will have items delivered to their homes.

Any leftover clothing items will be given to students who need them or to local nonprofit organizations.

Elementary Principal Melissa Moreland said the fourth-graders are enthusiastic about their student council work.

“They meet once a week at lunch, depending on the project,” Moreland said. “Some students even give up their recess because they are excited about the projects that they are doing.”

Council members also are making personalized birthday cards for all elementary students. Cards are delivered and each student receives a birthday surprise or a choice of candy.

“Their goal is to make someone’s day special,” Moreland said. “Council members have another surprise celebration planned in January.

“And when we return from the holiday break, they will be brainstorming their next project.”
