Darrell “Chub” Eugene Snell, 87 of Fredericktown, passed away at home on Sunday, September 3, 2023.
Darrell was born February 14, 1936, in Johnsville, Ohio to the late Floyd and Geneva (Melcher) Snell. He was the second oldest of eleven children. Marring the love of his life on August 15,1959, Darrell and Silver Jean (Russell) celebrated 64 years of marriage together.
Darrell was a graduate of Fredericktown High School class of 1954 where he was in the National Honor Society and Future Farmers of America. After high school, Darrell served our county for 6 years in the United States Army as a Reservist at Fort Knox and Camp Perry. Darrell worked in maintenance at Pittsburg Plate Glass (PPG) for 34 years all while farming their 80-acre farm. Darrell was a 4-H advisor for many years passing his love for horses to his kids and grandkids.
Darrell was a modern-day cowboy and loved to ride the trails. He and Silver also liked to travel and especially enjoyed going on cruises. Overall, though, Darrell was a hard-working man spending his time planting and harvesting crops, baling hay and straw, fixing and maintaining farm equipment and cutting and hauling wood. A true testimony to Darrell’s character is at age of 87 and with a cancer diagnosis, Darrell planted this year’s bean crop. Nothing was going to stop him from doing what he loved.
Darrell took pride and poured love into his family. He never missed a horse show, pig show, sporting event or school function for all his children and grandchildren. His family knew he was near when they would hear his famous whistle. He was always quick to offer a milkshake for a job well done.
Darrell was blessed with three beautiful children: Kelly (Tamara) Snell of Fredericktown, Tami (Bret) Cox of Fredericktown and Holly (Matt) Endicott of Bellville; six grandchildren: Cassi (Ross) Niekamp, Courtney (Casey) Brown, Nicholas (Hayley) Testa, Ethan Endicott, Chase Endicott, and Wyatt Snell; two step-grandchildren: Josh (Mackenzie) Cox and Caleb (Brenna) Cox. He has 12 joyous great-grandchildren any many special nieces and nephews. Darrell’s best attribute was that he made everyone feel special and one of his own.
Survived by his sisters and brothers Sandra Hunt, Barbara Logan, Sam (Carleen) Snell, Frank (Dee) Snell, Cheryl (Rod) Furniss, and Janenne Burgett. Darrell was proceeded in death by brothers Dale, Chuck and Gene Snell and sister Sevilla Ault.
