MOUNT VERNON – The new owners of the Mount Vernon News paid $1 million for the newspaper’s downtown property, according to records from the Knox County Auditor’s Office.
American Independent Media Inc. purchased the three-parcel property at 18 E. Vine St. for $1 million on Aug. 6. The seller, Republican Publishing Company, had owned the property since at least 1987, when such records became available.
The sale of the property came five days after the newspaper announced a change in ownership. Metric Media, a Chicago-based company that owns over 1,200 regional and business news websites across the country, bought the newspaper and officially took over Aug. 1. The Mount Vernon News was locally owned for more than 80 years before its sale.
The Mount Vernon News was the first print title Metric Media had acquired. Publisher Kyle Barnett could not be reached for comment Tuesday regarding the company’s plans for the property on East Vine Street.
Since Metric Media acquired the newspaper, print production has been cut to two days per week. The newspaper (both in print and the e-edition) has recently been redesigned, however, and the paywall has been lifted from its website.
