ASHLAND — Audio from a 911 call and a call log from dispatch reveals additional information about the incident that led to an officer-involved shooting late Saturday.

An unidentified Ashland police officer shot a man Saturday night while responding to a report of a suspect threatening people with a knife on the 600 block of Sandusky Street, Ashland Police previously confirmed.

In response to a public record request from Ashland Source, Ashland-Wooster Regional Council of Governments dispatch center released a redacted version of the approximately five minute-long 911 call and call log.

WARNING: The 911 call audio contains profanity and violence. Listener discretion is advised:

The call was dispatched 60 seconds after the call was answered and officers were at the scene three minutes and 55 seconds from the time of dispatch, according to WARCOG Operations Supervisor Cody Post.

The call log shows the call was made from 617 Sandusky Street at 11:40 p.m. All names are redacted from the log.

At the beginning of the call, a female caller can be heard telling a dispatcher that her son is drunk and “off his meds” and stating that her son threatened to kill both her and her other son.

The woman goes on to say her son recently was released from Heartland Home and was diagnosed with manic depressive disorder as well as mild schizophrenia and severe anxiety.

“I think he needs pink-slipped again,” the woman tells the dispatcher, referring to a need for hospitalization.

The woman tells the dispatcher she does not know whether her son had any weapons.

Then she says he is trying to kill himself.

“He has a handful of pills, and he’s trying to take them,” she tells the dispatcher, after yelling at her son to put down the pills.

The dispatcher instructs the caller to try to remain calm, saying that if she appears agitated her son may become further agitated.

The woman describes an altercation or argument unfolding between her two sons.

At the end of the call, the woman screams repeatedly and the dispatcher tells a responding officer the caller is being attacked. The woman was attacked by the suspect starting at 4:10 in the audio clip, WARCOG Operations Supervisor Cody Post confirmed.

Gunshots cannot be heard in the audio clip, but shots were fired approximately one minute after the attack began, according to a call log from the dispatch center.

Ashland Police Chief David Marcelli said in a news release the suspect “advanced toward” officers when they arrived at the scene. Then an officer fired one shot from his issued service pistol, the release states. Marcelli confirmed the male suspect was shot.

Both the male suspect and the 911 caller were taken to University Hospitals Samaritan Medical Center by Ashland EMS. Their names and conditions have not been released.

The scene and shooting investigation were turned over to the Attorney General’s Office, Bureau of Criminal Investigation. A BCI spokesman confirmed the bureau was contacted to investigate, per Ashland Police policy. BCI has not yet released any additional information.
