MOUNT VERNON – Flowers for You at 22 E. Gambier Street was the winner of the 2018 Main Street Mount Vernon’s Christmas window display contest.

“Thank you so much to all businesses who participated in the contest or decorated their storefronts in any way,” said Carrie Hyman, Main Street Mount Vernon Executive Director. “Mount Vernon is lucky to have a beautiful downtown at all times of the year, but especially during the holiday season.

“That extra effort creates a special atmosphere for families to enjoy. I encourage everyone to really look at and appreciate the windows as they shop downtown.”

Over 20 windows featured a variety of holiday scenes, “March of the Toys,” beautiful store merchandise, and Christmas cheer.

Full of decorated trees and toys, Flowers For You’s window features a larger than life nutcracker, a jack in the box, and lots of toys. Candy canes and stuffed animals adorn the within theme tree and other trees are full of gold, purple and silver ornaments. The annual poinsettia display fills a side window.

Herald’s Appliances & Electronics at 121 South Main Street won best in theme. A large tree fills the background of each window and the front is full of toys. One window features toys from Christmases past including blocks, dolls, and teddy bears. The other is filled of present day toys including Pikachu, Nemo, Lightning McQueen, and more. 

Crickets on South Main at 120 South Main Street took the Most Downtown Spirit award. Three trees, a fireplace, and many toys adorn the porch of this business. Nutcrackers filled a bench, toy vehicles were under each tree, a riding NYPD car, and a tricycle added to the old-fashioned toy Christmas feel.

Judge’s Choice went to Paul’s Flower Shop, located at 49 Public Square and Woolson’s Company at 115 S. Main Street. Paul’s Flower Shop featured 2 life-size Nutcrackers that guard the front entry as well as 2 trees, a fireplace, and toys fill the front window. Woolson’s Company featured toys of the past including a Cabbage Patch doll, a tea set, rocking horse, and lots of toy cars framing the front.

Main Street Mount Vernon would like to thank the judge volunteers from Food for the Hungry. Food for the Hungry is an annual drive that collects food and revenue for the Knox County branches of The Salvation Army and Interchurch Social Services. These agencies in turn use the donations to help Knox County families with basic necessities throughout the year.

Organizers noted 100 percent of all donations to Food For the Hungry stay in Knox County. Food for the Hungry annual broadcast will be held on December 8 at the Knox County Memorial Building at 112 E. High Street. Their goal this year is to raise $220,000
