FREDERICKTOWN – Fredericktown Police Patrolman Rene Joris received a commendation for his keen observation and quick response to flames at a residence in Fredericktown.

Fredericktown Police Chief Roger Brown said, on December 20, 2015 Patrolman Joris was on patrol when he observed flames in the area of a side porch of a residence. Uncertain if the flames were from a grill or an illegal burning incident, Joris immediately returned to the residence to investigate. At that time he discovered a fire on the porch.

Ptl. Joris notified the Knox County 911 Dispatch Center of the fire and requested the Fredericktown Community Fire District be dispatched to the scene. He quickly alerted the occupants of the home of the fire and they were evacuated safely. Joris and the homeowner were able to distinguish the fire before it spread to the structure, Brown said.

Chief Brown said, the Commendation to Patrolman Rene Joris is in recognition of his keen observation of flames at the rear of a home and his quick response to alert the occupants of a fire on their back porch minimized damage to the home and potentially prevented injury and protected lives.

Ptl. Joris joined the Fredericktown Police Department in June 2015 after completing his Basic Peace Officer Training at the Central Ohio Technical College. Prior to joining the police department, Joris was employed 14 years at the Mt. Vernon Municipal Court as a probation officer, Brown said.
