MOUNT VERNON — The 12th annual Shopping Cart Derby will take place this Saturday, Dec. 13. The teams represent four media partners that work together to conduct the Food For The Hungry Drive. Teams will be collecting food and funds to help our neighbors in need. The race will kick off at 10:45 and all teams will race from locations around the city into the Mount Vernon Public Square.
Team Time Warner will begin the race at the Knox County Career Center and come up Martinsburg Road onto South Main and proceed to the Square. Team members are Larry George, Will Dunham, Zach Williams, Charlie Walker, Joe Berg, Scott Sargeant, Mark Gamble, and Scott Schlosser.
Team Good Times Great Oldies 13 WMVO/The Super Q 93.7 WQIO will begin at Dr. Price Veterinary Clinic on Mansfield Avenue; follow Mansfield Avenue into the Public Square. Team members are Tyler Mathias, Nick Neighbarger, Nate Peck, Robert Kane, and Brady Mathias.
Team Mount Vernon News will begin at Edgewood Road and travel down East High Street to the Public Square. Team members are Corby Wise, Kay Culbertson, and LIz Lutwick.
Team WNZR will begin at Ross Motors and follow Harcourt Road to West High Street and on to the Square. Team members are Faith Orecchio, Emily Porter, Alex Gray, and Drew Chaltry.
The public may set their donations by the road or on their porch for pick up along these routes. Cheer your favorite team on by bringing your donation from anywhere in the city to one of these routes. Support vehicles will follow teams to handle overflow from their carts. Each team must make two laps around the Square in order to complete their race.
Three trophies will be awarded: Fastest to the Square, Most Food Collected, and Most Money Collected. Last year the race resulted in collecting $980 and 3,838 food items.
