DELAWARE – A Westerville man riding his bicycle on U.S. 36 was killed after being struck by a vehicle on Tuesday morning, according to the Delaware Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 6:23 a.m. Tuesday on U.S. 36 near North Old State Road, in Berlin Township, Delaware County, the Patrol stated.

In a press release, the Patrol reported that Brooke A. Dienst, 29, of Delaware, was driving a blue 2011 Honda Accord westbound on U.S. 36 in the right lane near North Old State Road. Michael A. Tighe, 39, of Westerville, was riding his bicycle westbound on the right berm of US 36.

According to the Patrol, Dienst drove across the white edge line and onto the right berm and struck Tighe and his bicycle. Tighe succumbed to his injuries sustained from the crash and was pronounced deceased on scene.

Tighe was wearing a helmet and Dienst was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash.

Alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be a factor in the crash.

Next of kin has been notified.

U.S. 36 westbound lanes were closed for approximately two and a half hours. The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, Delaware County Fire and EMS, Berlin Township Fire and EMS, BST&G Fire and EMS and Survival Flight.

The crash remains under investigation.
