Does anyone know how to treat the skin for per food allergies. My dog had food that caused her skin to breakout. It is getting better but till it clears up does anyone have any suggestion on topicals that will reduce the itching.

T.S.C. sells 2 anti itch meds for dogs. One is for "hotspots" It also helps heal the wound. I can't remember what the other would be. I am sure a sales rep could help. Aloe vero (pure) also worked great on my dog. (She was allergic to grass) I always had plants and harvested my own.(glass garden will have a plant) The bottles usually have alcohol and preserveties. good luck!!!
A trip to the vet and a cortizone shot will also work, while draining your wallet

It is better to not put topical treatment on them. You run the risk of them licking it off and nothing really is going to help an allergy externally anyway. Is she on Prednisilone or are you giving allergy shots? Or an antibiotic (if she scratched herself open?)? I would suggest a bath in a medicated shampoo like Pyoban and Selsum Blue. That should help to soothe the itch until the meds kick in. Pyoban should be available from your vet. Honestly OTC meds should not be used unless prescribed by a vet. (Benadryl may help, but ask your vet) While many of human meds are actually the same as critter meds, it should always be a vets call what to use.

P.S. While we are on the subject, anyone who ever thinks it is ok to give a dog Asprin, please don't. We are seeing increasing incidents of dogs with severe ulcers from this practice. While some vets will still say this okay, I strongly urge you to monitor closely and only do this if you really can not afford to get an appropriate pain med. If your dog developes an ulcer or pancrititis(sp) from this, you will agree it is FFAAARRR cheaper to pay the price of a office call and get the right medication, i.e. Metacam, Tramadol, Rymadil ect...

I have to strongly disagree with using TSC as a pharmacy. Over the summer we treated a Chi (2 lbs) for poisoning. TSC told the owner that Bronco fly Spray for livestock would kill fleas. Well it didn't kill the fleas, and the dog was in multi organ failure when we got her. While we can not conclusively say that was the only cause, it set a chain of events in motion. We have also treated over half a dozen dogs for Parvo whose owners got their Vac from that store. Those folks at TSC may mean well, but they are not trained in prescribing meds or treating health problems.

If you can't afford the vet, you can't afford the pet.

Aloe is actually a homopathic remedy. It will not hurt the dog to ingest it. (People Drink it too.) It is however poison to cats. Do your research before using just anything. Hotspots are usually open sores. I have always used the hotspot med to help heal and reduce the itching. Just cant remember the name of the brand. I am only suggesting asking for the product, Not what the person selling thinks. (I can see how the fly wipe would kill a small animal.) Its meant for horses and cattle.(one thousand pound animals) I grew up on a farm, with many different animals and have always had lots of critters. yogurt has always been one of my favorite remedys. An oatmeal or baking soda bath wouldn't hurt. Either will neutralize the itch. (dont let the dog drink the baking soda water)
(My vet always told me to use aspirin) Said it was the same as rymidal. (was he wrong?) I always used ecotrin coated.

Parvo is in this county....may have nothing to do with the vac from TSC...if the dogs had already been exposed to Parvo before the vacs had time to be fully affective...the dogs could broke with Parvo

I have used vac from feed stores, farm supplies most of my dogs lives...NEVER have had a problem...and my dogs live to teen years or older and travel all over.

Storage of vacs is important...for it effectiveness...but as I said I have NEVER had a problem with them...but I do know...many vets dont like the idea we can BUY them from these stores...and have worked hard to stop it...

SMITHKAT1, BOY DO I KNOW ABOUT FOOD ALLERGIES, THE SCRATCHING DOESN'T MEAN IT'S ON THE SKIN THAT'S THE PROBLEM--MOST ALLERGY PROBLEMS ARE COMING FROM THE "INSIDE". I HAVE ONE OF MY DOGS THAT DROVE ME CRAZY--NOW I TAKE CARE OF IT EASY.---YOU WILL NEED A VET.----WENT TO MY VET. INSTANTLY PUT HER ON PREDNISONE 5MG.--SHE WAS GIVEN WHEN NEEDED--I WAS AFRAID IF SHE HAD IT TO OFTEN THERE COULD BE TROUBLE--FOR IT'S A STEROID,TOLD THAT TO VET.--HE SAID "YOU HAVE 3 CHOICES--PUT HER ON THE PILL FOREVER--STOP AND WATCH HER SCRATCH --OR HAVE HER TESTED TO SEE WHAT SHE'S ALLERGIC TO".
I DIDN'T LIKE HIS ATTITUDE--WENT TO OTHER VET.--THEY PUT HER ON THE VERY SAME THING. SHE SEEMS TO DO BETTER WHEN I DO AWAY FROM BEEF, AND STAY WITH CHICKEN.-------------ANYTHING YOU PUT ON THE OUTSIDE WILL "NOT" HEAL IT!
ALL YOU SPEND AT STORES YOU COULD PAY FOR A VET. VISIT--MY PILLS ARE $12.00 FOR 30.
I WISH YOU WELL---SHE NOW CAN GO WEEKS WITH NO PILL-LOOKED AT DATE ON PRESCRIPTION-11/24/08 AND HAVE 16 LEFT! I KNOW WHAT OTHERS WILL SAY ABOUT SREROIDS AND I ALSO KNOW--MY GAL HAS BEEN ON P. FOR ABOUT 4 YRS.
IT GRADUALLY GETS BETTER AND BETTER -----"GO TO A VET." YOUR WASTING YOUR MONEY OTHERWISE. MY BEST TO YOU AND YOUR LITTLE ONE!

WANT THE PET FORUM--MOST INTERESTING!

I did take her to the vet and she too was put on prednisone. She is now off beef, strickly on chicken and I try to stay away from wheat and gluten in her. I like to make her food for her but it gets costly. She loves rice and veggies and chicken mixed. She is spoiled rotten. She turned a year old last week, im hoping she grows out of it. She occasionally steals the cat food, but other than that she is doing great. Thank you for your post. I am not very experienced with dogs obviously. Cats im a no brainer at.

great job...the med is not an answer..only temp...finding the food that is causing it is...and changing diet is a simple, cheap way...
I have been working with a friend with their rescue dog (happens to be from our county tho they are in Toledo) the dog has allergies too...she is a nurse..so understands long term issues with meds...she has bumped up her dogs Omegas which is helping and yes, the food change too...

smithkat, our black lab pup is allergic to corn or wheat, vet said it's a common trait with a lab. Poor thing was scratching constantly, had hives and had bald patches. When we first got her, I thought it was dry skin due to climate change, she had been an outside pup, but of course we had her inside. So for about 2 weeks or so I made her food, chicken and rice, and her skin calmed right down, took a a while for the hair to grow back, but she's great now. we have her on a brand of dog food (black diamond I think) that is chicken and rice, but we can tell when the baby slips her too many cheerios, she'll start scratching. Vet said she may outgrow it, so we'll see

I have a ****er spaniel that has really bad allergies and I have had her to the vet several times. I had to change her food to a vegetable and soy diet, and the vet also said to pour benadryl on her food. Believe it or not it really worked.

I was wondering if the same answers here apply to a cat. I'm dealing with this but it's my cat. Scratching, weight loss and losing hair from the scratching.

This could also be the problem with your cat.
I have one allergic to the food dye (the red color in meow mix) I feed Science diet for the 8 inside refugees , and meow mix to the 10 or so outside refugees. (The inside cats prefer mew mix too.)
Cats can sometimes be allergic to their vacinations (I have one like that)
Cats can become compulsive lickers, after having surgery, or just over grooming in general.
Good luck in determining the cause. Most likely the food, be it the dye , corn or wheat. (Fish is not good for a cat.)
