BTW...The link doesnt work....

but what can ya do? With the advent of the internet, this was sure to happen real soon. Not just because of the bad economy, but hell, they are not making any more money on fines, because people dont check out books and movies like they used to. Its not the same anymore. I was very suprised to see how many employees they have in the first place.

I knew that they were short on funds; didn't realize that it was this bad

"to the end of a story line - but am afraid that people will lose the appreciation for sitting down and reading a good book........

charge for computer usage. They will either make up the deficit in a hurry or cut an expense :) Spent about 5 hours in the library a couple weeks back. The computers were in use the entire time, generally by the same few people.
An unfortunate situation, but money is a concern everywhere.

am not sure this is a "money" concern

but rather a generation of people who look for quick fixes rather than taking the time to sit down nd read a good book

the advent of the internet, of course, has provided many useful tools..........it has, unfortunately, made those who are lazy lazier.........

the loss of the desire to read the written word is sooooooooooooo sad, imho

alb is correct - i tended to see the same bunch just hanging in there normally (example - the guy that NEVER combs his hair) . I love the library and info availability provided. Take care of the basic idea of the library and cut back on the specialized services.

I am surprised all the staff lasted this long...use to be volunteers did much of the work..

.Many times I have walked into the main branch and there are 3-4 people behind the desk...

Fred use to be the same..havent been there in a long time....and most of the time..more were standing around then doing anything..and I use to spend many hours in there..

Yes, with the computers..it does seem to be regulars..was when I was using them..

They NEED to long long range ...to be sure the library stays open..even when hours are cut a lot...the main is very busy by all ages..

Always a need for a good book. Shame to see it get to this point. So many successful libraries around the United States regardless of the extent of how widespread the Internet has become.

Me, for the most part I like picking up a crisp new book, but I still have many uses for a public library.

Its a shame that things had to get to this point and yet more people in this county are finding themselves out of work. What will happen? Time will tell...

I too have seen many employees behind the desk at the library. Not always a bad idea to trim staff. It would not hurt any business.

am gonna stand against charging for computer use - the purpose of a library is to provide information FREE to the public - a lot of kids (whose parents obviously have no internet) use those computers for their own school research - there are people using the computers for job searches - there are people using those computers who simply need to communicate with their families - I could go on, but you get the point

with the advent of the internet, this situation has been a long time coming....the libraries will simply need to learn to structure themselves according to the present standards.........in the event the library initiates a fund raiser to help keep them afloat, I'd be willing to put time and energy into such a project - Nothing like relaxing with a good book -

A fee for use of the computers seems fair -- or at least a time limit so the same ones arent on them all day -- probably because they dont have one at home -- and dont have a job either if they are in there all the time and on them!!!!!!

I agree with the "free" information that you're talking about and not charging for the use of the Internet. I've traveled to many libraries, some of the smallest, and actually the largest in the United State and not once have I seen a charge for the use of the Internet. DVD's, CD's, library loans, and other items YES.

A lot of people i think would be interested in helping out with a "fund" that you mention CM, more people need to know about whats going on.

Actually, I asked a couple of employees a few months back if the library was going to have some kind of fund raiser to help defray costs - and all I got was a doe in the headlight type stare and a "I don't know" response....guess I need to go to the guys at the top to find out what they're planning to do - lol
